Thrive

At King James I Academy, every student matters. We strive to ensure that every student feels safe, valued, and included. Here at King James, we have introduced Thrive.
Research has shown that how we behave is linked to how we are feeling and how we are feeling is linked to how we learn. Here at King James, we recognise and notice the feelings and emotions of our students and how we can help them build strong healthy relationships with adults and peers. We recognise that the development of their social and emotional health can contribute to their confidence, self-esteem, and learning.
What is Thrive?
Thrive is a therapeutic approach to help support students with their emotional, social, and mental development. The Thrive approach offers practical strategies and techniques to promote healthy social and emotional relationships.
Why might my child attend a Thrive session?
Sometimes young people experience emotional ups and downs such as:

  • Difficulties with friendships.
  • Getting into trouble during social time.
  • Preparedness for learning.
  • Finding it difficult to manage their strong feelings.

Not knowing where to turn when their feelings are too big to manage on their own.
These situations can lead to feeling overwhelmed, angry, frustrated, sad, lonely, confused, or anxious. These feelings are normal and happen to many young people. Thrive sessions help students to manage their feelings, teach them strategies and help promote their learning at school.
Thrive Online
Here at King James, we have introduced Thrive online. An online screening tool which helps identify students who would benefit from Thrive intervention sessions. Sessions happen within a small group and include activities which may include:

  • Storytelling.
  • Games.
  • Music.
  • Movement.
  • Relaxation.
  • Forest school.
  • Arts and crafts.
  • Relaxation.

These sessions are designed based on identified developmental pathways to promote confidence, independence, sharing, resilience, expressing feelings and social skills.
For more information about the Thrive approach see the Thrive website www.thriveapproach.com or contact Lisa Lumley-Imerson (Thrive Emotional Health in Adolescence Practitioner) via the school office.
