Proposed Development

Consolutation on proposals for repair and adaptation works to the lodge and outbuildings at King James I Academy

Located on the access track to the south of the school bordering on to South Church Road and Queens Road, the Lodge and Outbuildings form part of the wider King James I Academy site. Both buildings are Grade II listed due to the fact that they are part of the original grammar school development and have value both in the quality of their original construction and their relationship to the other buildings on the site. However, the lack of fixed and continuous use has meant that both are in poor condition. A condition survey has been completed on behalf of the school which has identified repair and conservation works to mitigate ongoing deterioration of the buildings.

Alongside this piece of work, we have been assessing opportunities to improve facilities for the school, Bishop Juniors Football Club and the Durham Amateur Football Trust amongst other community users. This would be through the provision of new changing facilities, community area and gallery / workshop spaces within the Lodge and Outbuildings, subject to successful funding applications.

These proposals have been developed to a concept design level. Prior to the submission of a formal planning and listed building consent application the School would welcome the input of the local community and neighbours on the scheme. Proposed plans for the buildings and external landscaping can be seen on the following links:
