Students in Years 7-9 have been taking part in reading lessons with a difference in our Library.
Delivered by Academy Librarian, Mr Wheatley, students in Year 8 were introduced to complex vocabulary whilst learning about the inspirational life and many achievements of boxer and social activist, Mohammed Ali.
Students learned about the stance that Ali took against the Vietnam War and his refusal to serve in the military, which resulted in his arrest, conviction and suspension from professional boxing; he was also stripped of his boxing titles.
In later years he devoted much of his time to philanthropy, supporting the Special Olympics and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, amongst other organisations. He also travelled to numerous countries, including Mexico and Morocco, to help those in need, and in 1998, he was chosen to be a United Nations Messenger of Peace because of his work in developing nations.
