Curriculum Intent in PSHE

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education, prepares young people for life's challenges and opportunities. The subject gives young people the opportunity to explore their lifelong goals, values and aspirations. It is divided into three topic areas, Living in the Wider World, Health and Well Being and Relationships and Sex Education (Please see more information on RSE below). It will include lessons on managing friendships and relationships, emotional well being, finances and careers. Through our curriculum we help students prepare for the opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities that may come their way. We understand that students with a good quality of health and wellbeing can achieve better academically and meet their goals and aspirations in life.

Curriculum Intent in RSE

The PSHE teaching team are committed to providing high quality, age appropriate relationship and sex education for all pupils. Our lessons will cover the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. Our aim is to teach our young people the information and values they will need in order to take responsibility for their sexual health and have safe and fulfilling relationships. King James I Academy students provide feedback on their lessons, which in turn informs our planning to ensure that student’s lessons are both informative and relevant to their needs.  Our RSE team is supported in the delivery of lessons by the King James I Academy  Student Support and Safeguarding team.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

The topic is introduced in year 7 by looking at issues surrounding puberty, self-esteem and different types of friendships. The students are taught how to recognise the elements of happy and healthy friendships along with recognising negative behaviours within friendships.

Year 8

Building on the topics explored in Year 7, students examine the issues surrounding relationships and technology, staying safe, sexuality and respect within relationships.

Year 9

In year 9 the topic is developed further with the introduction of lessons such as love, peer pressure, contraception, sexually transmitted infection, underage parenting and delay.
